MIL-STD 461 (RS-105)

½ m EUT test system

Part Number: RS105-0.5

APELC supports the EMI/EMC testing community with a lightweight, portable test electromagnetic pulse (EMP) simulator that has an array of extra features convenient in the field. The system uses APELC’s compact Marx Generator technology to generate a pulse in accordance with MIL-STD 461, test procedure RS-105.

The pulse propagates from the source (Marx Generator), down a tapered transmission line, and into a parallel plate test volume. In this region, the electronic equipment under test (EUT) can be subjected to field strengths as high as 55 kV/m and as low as 5 kV/m, in the form of a 1.8 – 2.8 ns rise-time, and 23 (+/- 5) ns pulse. The remaining energy in the system is dissipated into a matched load.

Constructed using lightweight materials and a novel rod geometry, the Portable RS-105 Vertical EMP Simulator allows for homogeneous fields and stringent adherence to the MIL-STD in a lightweight, portable package.

This system is easy to ship and set up at different locations, with the typical setup time being approximately 1 hour. The system is free-standing, so anchoring is not needed.

The system is powered from standard 120 VAC, 10 Amp service and uses pressurized, dry breathable air for high voltage insulation.

CHARACTERISTICS

The Portable RS-105 Vertical EMP Simulator can be transported in a 10’ x 4’ x 5’ crate and assembled with simple tools in less than 2 hours. Testing equipment that fits in the 0.5m EUT volume, the system can also test in multiple locations or on equipment with restricted transport access.

Disclaimer

Please exercise caution when operating near electronic equipment other than the EUT. Unhardened electronics can be harmed by the EMP generated by the RS-105 test system. Take precautions to isolate or protect sensitive electronics from exposure to high-EMI environments. It is not recommended to take personal electronics devices such as phones near the system when in use.

Persons with personal electronics or medical devices should not operate the Vertical EMP Simulator, nor should they be proximate to the operation of this system.
